Design the Life You Want
What does your dream life look like? The big, giant, almost fantasy-like, dream you have for your life? What stirs your soul? What fulfills you? What do you yearn for?
These can be scary questions – tapping into our big dreams often taps into our big fears as well. Do you know the answers to these questions? If yes, fantastic! These exercises will help you clarify them further. If no, great! These exercises will get you started in a way that’s fun and rewarding. These exercises will help you get in touch with your dreams. You can do one, two, or all three (which I recommend).
Stop right now, set a timer for 20 minutes – and write out the answers to the questions above. Keep writing for 20 minutes. (If you don’t know what to write – write the phrase “If I knew what I wanted, I would say I want __________,” then write whatever comes to mind.) It is important to set the timer and keep writing for 20 minutes. In doing this, you circumvent the critical voice in your head that gets in your way. There are no right or wrong answers. There are no judgments here. Keep going back to the questions and answering them, until the time goes off!
For this next exercise, you’ll need to plan a visit to the library or a book store. Again, plan to spend at least 20 minutes here. Set a timer if you like, and take a notebook and pen with you. Now, wander through the store and browse the books you see. Visit sections you know you love. Find a directory and look for sections you never visit, and visit them! Take note of what books you are drawn to. What appeals to you? Jot down titles or sections that interest you. Remember – you are not here to buy, you are here to browse. You are on an expedition of self-discovery. You are
looking for anything that piques your interest. And as always – no judgments, be curious. Be sure to write down your discoveries.
In this final exercise, you’ll want to gather your materials first. You’ll need a stack of old magazines – with lots of pictures, a sheet of poster board, scissors, and some tape or glue. Once again set the timer for 20 minutes. While thinking about the questions above, go thru the magazines and cut or tear out any picture that moves you. Do not evaluate or judge (really – you don’t have time!). Just cut out the pictures that call to you and move on. When the timer goes…stop, breathe. Now take your poster board and tape or glue. Set the timer again – for 20 minutes. And make a collage. No thinking. Just let your intuition guide you. Go! When the timer goes off – you are done!
Whether you’ve done one, two, or all three of the exercises, the next step is the same: put everything aside for a day or two. Then come back to your notes and collage. What do you see? What are some recurring themes? What appeals to you? Can’t tell? Ask a trusted friend, family member, mentor, or coach – what do they see?
Now – once more – what does your dream life look like? The big, giant, almost fantasy-like, dream you have for your life? What stirs your soul? What fulfills you? What is the life you want? In order to design the life you want, you need to know what you want.
As you tie your daily actions, daily to-dos, daily goals to your big dreams for your life – you will be more motivated, more inspired, more excited about getting up every day, getting to it, and more able to recover when you encounter set-backs. Because you will be in hot pursuit of something that excites and inspires you.

Recommended Resources

How do you set goals for your life? Would you like to set goals that excite you, that inspire you to take action? Goals are a very personal thing. It is important to identify what you want, goals that are right for you.  Not goals that are fly by night fantasies from a magazine article you read or commercial you saw – or something you do because Oprah told you to do it. (And I love Oprah.)
Would you like to set goals that you will not only accomplish, but also will inspire you? Goals that move you to action. Rather than drain you, they energize you! Go to my web site and download my free report: Five Days to Goals That Inspire You (in the section: “A Gift for You”) and you will not only set the goals, you will also create a daily action plan to achieve them!
