When to Push, When to Take a Break

August 28, 2008

I often talk the importance of taking action, any action, to maintain momentum toward your goals.  Belief alone is not enough, it must be accompanied by action.

As you take action, deliberate action, daily action toward your goals, at some point – you will need to rest.  Yes, rest.  Take a break.  You will know you need this when you find yourself feeling tired – wondering where the energy will come for the next step, no matter how small.  Feeling overwhelmed can be another clue.  When that happens – it is time to stop, take a breath, and take a break.  Allow the changes you’ve made, the impact of the actions you’ve taken, to settle in.

I hit this point myself this week – I just hit a new level in a goal I want badly.  And I found myself struggling to take the next steps.  That’s when I checked in – and found – I am tired.  I need to take a breather.  Let the successes and changes settle, if you will.

What that means is that I take a day – and rest, literally.  I’m napping.  I’m clearing my schedule.  I’m not making major decisions.  I’m not finding new actions to take.  I’m allowing brain and body to rest.
In a day or 2, I’ll be back in action again.  Refreshed, renewed.

I encourage you to do the same.  Take note when you begin to grow weary  or overwhelmed- ask yourself, “Do I need a break?  What do I need?”  and listen to the answer.
